Elephas
Limited Edition — Thailand. From the project ‘Salvation’. Series ‘Living with Elephants’.
A young female Asian elephant runs joyfully to freedom after being chained overnight to stop her foraging in the nearby forest and damaging property. Elephants are an integral part of Thai culture and tradition and are a major attraction for Thailand’s tourism industry since their integration in the 1960s.
Thousands of domestic elephants are kept for tourism related business in Thailand and many still struggle with severe welfare issues, including short chaining, inadequate diets, lack of veterinary care, and forced physical interactions with tourists. Despite slow progress and the positive growth of ethical sanctuaries, a large portion of the captive population continues to suffer from poor living conditions.
