The Project

The culmination of a twenty-year journey confronting the illegal wildlife trade and the destruction of nature, Salvation builds on the landmark book 'Black Market' alongside decades of unrivalled access to conservationists, enforcement agencies, trafficking networks and local communities.

It is both a call to arms and proof that species can recover before time runs out.

The Book

sal·va·tion noun · preservation or deliverance from harm, ruin, or loss. Origin: Middle English: from Old French salvacion, from ecclesiastical Latin salvation - (from salvare ‘to save’), translating Greek sōtēria.

The Battle for Earth’s Wildlife

Salvation is an in-depth examination of humankind's relationship with nature through the lens of consummate photographers and journalists embracing local stories and indigenous knowledge. It addresses the risk of pandemics and the ways in which extinction and loss of biodiversity are a critical threat to our future, showing how these issues are interconnected.

The project follows the trafficking of wild animals from remote corners of Africa to the markets of Asia, Europe and the Americas. It highlights the poverty, corruption and greed at the very heart of this trade but it also celebrates conservation success, and the extraordinary courage and commitment of those battling to save earth's wildlife and, by extension, all our futures.

In 2019, the World Bank estimated the cost of wildlife crime to be in the region of one to two trillion US dollars per annum — a staggering sum that represents a vast network of suffering and destruction that is diminishing our world at a rate faster than earth's ecosystems can sustain. The IUCN states that 42,000 species are on the verge of extinction, with wildlife trade and poaching being one of the main drivers.
