Emergence
Limited Edition — Pha Luang, Mueang Fueang, Lao PDR. From the project ‘Salvation’.
Hundreds of thousands of wrinkle-lipped free tailed bats (Mops Plicatus) emerge at dusk from a massive cave high in the limestone cliffs of northern Laos. Pha Luang cave is an ancient human living site and home to massive bat colonies which emerge en-masse every evening as they have done for millions of years to hunt before returning to the cave at dawn.
Shot at extremely high shutter speed using a hand built 8m bamboo tripod to raise the camera up to the level of the emerging bats and a long range radio shutter trigger to capture them in flight as they moved with incredible speed and collective agility. It was the most difficult photographic technical challenge I have ever encountered.
