Mountains of the Moon
Limited Edition — Altai Mountains, Mongolia. From the project ‘Salvation’.
The Mongolian ibex (Capra sibirica), is native to Mongolia's rugged alpine and desert environments. In Mongolian mythology and folklore, the Ibex is venerated as a sacred mountain spirit. Representing vitality, agility, and the untamed power of the highlands, it features prominently in Central Asian art, ancient rituals, and hunting traditions.
Throughout the Altai and Himalayan highland cultures, the ibex is viewed as a protector of the mountains. Simply spotting one high on the crags is seen as a highly auspicious omen. Central Asian cultures tied the ibex to cosmic themes. Their majestic, curved horns were viewed as symbols of the moon and lunar phases, linking them to changing seasons and fertility.
