Ghost I
Limited Edition — Altai Mountains, Mongolia. From the project ‘Salvation’. Series ‘Chasing Ghosts’.
Known as the ‘ghost cat’, the snow leopard is now as endangered as the tiger with perhaps only 4,500 surviving in the wild. The declining population of snow leopards and countless other species is symptomatic of the global destruction of nature, with wild animal populations down nearly 60% since 1970.
Snow leopards have evolved for over 3 million years, and are one of the most secretive and efficient predators on the planet. Their massive shoulders enable the strength to bring down prey four times their own weight in the most extreme mountain environments on earth, their huge tails provide warmth and counterbalance.
For millennia, humans have coexisted with wildlife in this region, practicing nomadic pastoralism, herding sheep and goats, cattle, horses, yaks, and camels. Thanks to its low and sparsely distributed human population, Mongolia represents one of the last strongholds in Central Asia for many wild species considered rare, endangered, or declining elsewhere in their ranges, including the snow leopard, perhaps the world’s most elusive and charismatic big cat.
