King #II — fine art print by Adam Oswell, project Salvation

King #II

Limited Edition — Cameroon. From the project ‘Salvation’. Series ‘Gorilla Country’.

Shufai is a large western lowland silverback gorilla rescued as a traumatized infant by Ape Action Africa in 2006. Badly injured by the bullets that killed his mother, he was a physically and emotionally traumatized infant having witnessed the killing of his family. His left arm was amputated due to the injuries he received. An immense yet gentle being, damaged by human brutality and greed yet still playful and forgiving. His intense gaze had me transfixed, holding his hands over his heart, his vandalized experience conveyed through eyes that left me deeply moved. They are our teachers.

I came to Cameroon to document the wildlife trafficking and critical conservation issues now facing the Congo basin. The world has for centuries plundered Africa and its wildlife and now as global demand and supply chains reduce many of the once mysterious and unreachable places on earth to super markets, wildlife is being extracted and monetized like never before.

Shufai is one of thousands of trafficked apes captured and killed for bushmeat, the exotic pet trade and zoo's. It is estimated at least 3,000 great apes are lost from the wild each year to trafficking, though the true numbers are likely much higher. For every infant captured alive, an estimated 4 to 10 other apes, typically mothers and family members, are killed in the process. Prices for a live infant can range from a few thousand dollars at the source to hundreds of thousands of dollars for the final buyer in destination countries.

Social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and WhatsApp are frequently used to broker sales and connect dealers to potential buyers. The trade in great apes forms a pipeline from source countries in Africa and Southeast Asia to markets in the Middle East, Europe, USA and specific Asian countries.
