Gorilla Country
Limited Edition — Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Uganda. From the project ‘Salvation’ — series ‘Gorilla Country’.
On the borders of Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo lies a region that is home to some of the last mountain gorillas on earth. Ancient volcanoes rise from rich black earth to form fertile homes for one of our closest ancestors who evolved here over approximately 10 million years from a common ancestor shared with humans and chimpanzees. As an isolated subspecies of eastern gorillas (Gorilla beringei), they diverged from their lowland relatives about 10,000 to 20,000 years ago during the last ice age where they adapted specifically to high-altitude cloud forests.
The very first time I travelled to Africa was a profound revelation, an experience that drastically expanded my understanding of the very complex challenges facing modern conservation. Wildlife was everywhere it seemed but poverty and extreme human pressures on nature made it clear there are no easy answers.
On this day we were traveling back to northern Uganda when we passed this striking scene which beautifully shows the contrast and isolation of the gorillas current situation. Much progress has been made to conserve their numbers but human populations continue to encroach rendering their volcano homes fragmented and isolated, surrounded by communities struggling to etch out a living and deal with age old conflicts.
