In Perspective
Limited Edition — Altai Mountains, Mongolia. From the project ‘Salvation’. Series ‘Chasing Ghosts’.
The spectacular high mountains of Khukh Serkh Special Protected Area rise in dominance above the central valleys and communities of remote western Mongolia. Located on the borders of Kazakhstan, China and Russia, this is one of the last viable regions of the snow leopard and many other species now considered endangered and threatened by climate change.
Stretching approximately 1,200 miles (2,000 kilometers) from the Gobi Desert to the West Siberian Plain, the Altai mountain range acts as a natural watershed for great rivers like the Ob and the Irtysh.
Approximately one hundred protected areas currently exist for snow leopards, however few if any are free of human influence. Its survival hinges largely upon coexistence with human communities trying to work out a living under extreme environmental conditions and a shifting baseline. Innovative and participatory approaches for engaging communities in snow leopard and biodiversity conservation are critical to ensure the species’ long-term survival.
